Stained concrete offers a wide array of unique decorative options for a reasonable price. Concrete stain is more than just a simple color on your floor's surface. As opposed to delivering a flat color, like paint or colored coatings, stains penetrate the concrete itself to produce a floor rich with depth and dimension. Even when treated with identical products, no two surfaces will look the same. This is due to a variety of factors, including the composition and age of the concrete and its surface porosity.
The two main types of concrete stain—acid-stained concrete and water-based—can both be used on new builds and existing flooring, indoor or outdoor. Concrete stain penetrates the existing surface, therefore the condition of the concrete at the beginning of the project is of high importance. That's why, if necessary, we start by removing any material on the surface to assure the color can penetrate and develop to the best of its ability.
The colors available will depend on whether you decide on acid stain concrete or water-based concrete stain. Acid-based stain is more limited in scope. Manufacturers typically offer eight options, which are mostly neutral, earthy tones, including basic browns, terracottas, tans, and blue-green colors. Even with limited options, you could choose to mix two or more acid-based stains together before they are applied, or you might decide to add one color on top of another to offer some variation. Acid-based stains consist of inorganic metallic salts which have been dissolved in a solution containing acid and water. These types of stains penetrate below the surface, resulting in a chemical reaction that creates a permanent bond. The visually appealing effects of these concrete stains are partly a result of the translucent nature of these materials (unlike an opaque coating). Water-based stain penetrates into the pores of the concrete floor to create a coating or colored film which can be either translucent or opaque. Since no chemical reaction occurs, the color tends to fluctuate less using these types of stains. Water-based stains are generally safer to apply because they lack acids, solvents, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
